Red Sox planning on Sept. 1 call-ups

NEW YORK -- Rosters can expand Tuesday to as many as 40 active players and the Red Sox plan on some additions.

But they're unsure how many, or when they may take place. It's possible the majority of the call-ups could wait until the Pawtucket regular season ends in another 10 days.

"We haven't yet firmed anything up,'' said interim manager Torey Lovullo. "That's for certain. What time that happens, we haven't determined yet. We were bouncing some names back and forth. In a way, it's tough for [new president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski] because he hasn't seen a lot of these guys. That's where the information gathering is happening for him, just getting filled in on some of the guys at Triple A that could come here and help us out.''

In terms of need, beyond some necessary additions in the bullpen, Lovullo said the Sox could use a third catcher (likely Sandy Leon), a middle infielder (Deven Marrero) and a spare outfielder (Bryce Brentz?).

"Just very typical stuff,'' said Lovullo, "but the catching thing is what we're talking about today.''

The Red Sox are currently at 37 on their 40-man roster, which means they could add some players not on the 40-man roster, such as veteran Allen Craig, who was outrighted earlier in the year and taken off the roster.

"There's room for guys who aren't [now] on the roster,'' said Lovullo.
