Red Sox out of the running for Shohei Ohtani

BOSTON — Shohei Ohtani will not be coming to the Red Sox.

The Japanese two-way player, a star pitcher and hitter who wants to do both in the majors, has decided not to hear a presentation from the Sox about joining the team, Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said. That's the next step in Ohtani's free agency process.'s Bryan Hoch reported the Yankees are out of the running as well, and that general manager Brian Cashman said Ohtani's reps told him no matter how strong a presentation the Yankees made, they could not turn themselves into a West Coast team or smaller market, hinting at Ohtani's preferences.

"We were not given that reason [that Cashman was]," Dombrowski said via email Sunday. "We were only told we were not being invited to make an in-person presentation."
