On Thursday evening, the Boston Red Sox were able to notch a come-from-behind victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Tied 7-7 in the ninth inning, Marco Hernandez cracked a solo home run -- the third of his career -- to give the Sox the win.
That win moved the Red Sox to five games over .500, but it also moved them to a tie for first place in come-from-behind victories this year among American League teams. Only New York Yankees and Houston Astros have as many as the Red Sox do.
That's a good sign for the Sox. Though they haven't quite lived up to expectations following a World Series-winning campaign, the team has at least shown some resilience when they fall behind. And that resilience was key for the squad last year, as they repeatedly came from behind during that season.
Of course, needing comeback victories isn't ideal, and the mediocre production of their starters may be part of the reason they have needed to create so many. The starters haven't performed up to snuff this season and Dave Dombrowski recently commented on the pitching staff's lack of success. Getting better pitching would certainly help the Red Sox to win more, but the fact that they have been able to notch comeback wins frequently is a good sign for when they get into pressure-packed situations.
Still, the team should target some help for their rotation and bullpen via trades from non-contenders.
The 2019 Red Sox have their warts, but they do have some redeemable qualities, like their ability to come from behind, that better demonstrate why they were able to emerge as champions last year. That's part of why they're still alive in the Wild Card race despite some first-half struggles.
