BOSTON - Larry Lucchino may be stepping down from his position as President and CEO of the Boston Red Sox, but he's not stepping away from the team entirely.
The Red Sox announced on Sunday that Lucchino has been named President/CEO Emeritus, effective October 16, when Chief Operating Officer Sam Kennedy will take over as club President.
According to the press release, "Lucchino will be an active participant in the strategic direction of the franchise and will participate in various issues facing Major League Baseball. Lucchino will remain a member of the Red Sox’ ownership group."
Fellow members of the Sox front office are glad to have him around.
“Larry has helped write a new chapter in the storied history of this franchise,” said Principal Owner John W. Henry. “He has brought boldness, vision, and intensity each day to Fenway Park. He has also assembled an outstanding team around him, the hallmark of a great CEO."
“Larry has put his heart and soul into the club,” said Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner. “His leadership has been pivotal in taking one of baseball’s crown jewels to new heights on and off the field. He is the most talented baseball executive I have ever known. I am pleased he will remain with the organization and that we can count on his wisdom as we tackle strategic issues facing the Red Sox and Major League Baseball."
