Could you imagine being one of the best hitters in baseball and not know your stats during the season?
According to a story by Jen McCaffrey of the Athletic, J.D. Martinez doesn't pay attention to his numbers at all.
I honestly don’t even know my stats. I’ll put my hand on the Bible and say that. I know how many home runs I have, but that’s about it. For me, personally, I don’t focus on any of that. I focus on what I can control, and that’s my preparation. That’s how I show up every day, how I study, how I grind out my swing and that’s my main focus.
Martinez had a career year last season with 43 home runs and 130 RBI to go with a .330/.402/.629 slash line, and while this year hasn't been up to that standard, the Red Sox slugger is still raking in 2019.
With 27 homers, 71 RBI and a .310/.383/.569 slash line, Martinez still anchors the best offense in baseball this season. That hasn't produced the same kind of results as 2018, mostly due to an underwhelming starting rotation and bullpen.
Perhaps it helps Martinez stay in the right mindset at the plate. If you aren't worried about your average or other totals, you can focus on more vital details to hitting.

However many quirks Martinez has when it comes to his approach at the plate, you can't argue with the results.
