Red Sox close in on record for consecutive games with a homer at Fenway

Andrew Benintendi's home run in the fifth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park gave Boston homers in 15 consecutive games at Fenway Park, two shy of the team record.

And the team that set that record wasn't the 2003 Sox, who hit a team record 238 home runs and featured six players with more than 25, led by Manny Ramirez' 37 and David Ortiz' 31.

Nor was it the 1977 "Crunch Bunch" that hit 213 homers, led by Jim Rice's 39, and had No. 9 batter Butch Hobson hit 30.

No, you have to go back 50 years to the summer of '69 when the Sox set the mark by homering at Fenway in 17 consecutive games from Aug. 18 to Sept. 16. h/t @SoxNotes on Twitter.

That team was led by Carl Yastrzemski's and Rico Petrocelli hitting 40 each (Petrocelli's total was then a record for a shortstop).

With two more games with the Rays this week and the way balls are flying out of ballparks this season (MLB is on pace for 6,668, nearly 1,100 more than a year ago, and more than 500 more than the record of 6,105 in 2017), that 1969 Sox record may be in jeopardy. The 2019 Sox have 164 homers (six players have more than 15) with 54 games remaining.
