Ortiz still a good influence on a young Red Sox team

On Saturday, David Ortiz reached 425 plate appearances for the 2015 season, which means his option vested for the 2016 season.

Ortiz will be 40 next season, and some members of Red Sox Nation might think it's time for Big Papi to go.

He's not always perfect, but he's an important part of the Red Sox' clubhouse.

"It’s not to suggest Ortiz is perfect. Like a lot of people, I wish he’d run harder on routine balls in the infield," Sean McAdam said. "Does he occasionally say some things you wish he wouldn’t? Yes. Is he a bad influence in that clubhouse? Absolutely not. Let’s all look at the positive intangibles. This guy has been part of three World Championship teams. He is the only Red Sox player alive who can say that and I think he’s had a good influence on a lot of young players that have come through here."

Lou Merloni echoed a similar sentiment.

"What gets me upset is he doesn’t touch first base sometimes. That aggravates me that he doesn’t go all out when he runs the ball," Merloni said. "But I don’t think he’s a bad influence on that team."
