NEW YORK -- Some injury updates and developments:
*David Ortiz, who left the game in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday night and was replaced at first by Travis Shaw, remained out of the lineup Saturday, bothered by soreness in his left heel.
Ortiz has dealt with heel issues since 2013, when he had an Achilles injury and playing first base -- as he did Friday -- can aggravate
the condition.
"He's a big body and he asks his body to do a lot,'' said interim manager Torey Lovullo, "There was some left heel tightness [Friday]. He knows himself really well because of that time [in 2013]. When he says he needs to get off his feet, we understand that it needs to happen quickly.''
Lovullo said Ortiz was available to pinch-hit Saturday.
"We'll see where he's at at the end of the day,'' said Lovullo. "Obviously, I said the other day [the plan was for Ortiz to play first base] in games one and three. We haven't changed that. But we'll know more about that after the game tonight.''
Shaw was again at first in Ortiz's absence.
*Junichi Tazawa, who experienced some tightness in his lower half after fielding a comebacker in the 10th inning Friday night, was unavailable - both because of his workload in the game and some lingering soreness.
"He was early getting some [treatment],'' said Lovullo. "What happened was, when he turned to plant and get his body in a position to throw to second, his lower body didn't turn properly. It's in his [right] groin area. After the game and [Sunday], we'll see where he's at and we'll see if we can get him back in there as soon as possible.''
*Hanley Ramirez remained out of the lineup for the second game in a row with a sore right shoulder.
"He's going to go through some basic baseball progression,'' said Lovullo, "and test that shoulder soreness. You get to this point of the year, all these kinds of injuries, all these nagging things are typical. My gut feeling is, he's going to be ready to play sooner rather than later. He wants to play. We just have to be smart about it.''
Ramirez told Lovullo he feels the shoulder soreness when he throws and swings.
"He felt like he couldn't let the ball go without feeling that tenderness in his shoulder,'' said Lovullo of throwing. "I think he did say it was affecting him a little bit with his swing, missing a couple of pitches that he felt he could have [otherwise] hit the night before. When I heard that, it made a lot of sense to give him this rest, to stay ahead of it.''
Unlike Ortiz, it appeared as though Ramirez wasn't available to pinch hit.
*Less than two hours before the game, catcher Ryan Hanigan was scratched with right calf tightness and replaced in the lineup by Blake Swihart, who caught all 10 innings Friday night.
