McMillon: ‘You don't realize how close you are' in Double A

Since 2003 the Double A Portland Sea Dogs have been part of the Red Sox organization, helping young players prepare for their shot in the big leagues.

With just Triple A standing between the prospects and the Major Leagues, Sea Dogs coach Billy McMillon knows part of his job is keeping his players focused.

"That's one of our points of emphasis for the guys is that you don't realize how close you are [in Double A]," said McMillon. "You can go back to Mookie Betts. He started here last year, got to the big leagues last year. I think they know it and sometimes that can be a little intimidating because they want it so badly. We've just got to keep those guys focused and continue to work to get better.

McMillon took over as manager in 2014 and has already seen Mookie Betts, Blake Swihar and Eduardo Rodriguez make it to the big leagues.

"You always want to feel like you said or did something that helped those guys get to the next level, but a lot of times it's those guys. They have tremendous ability and in some cases it was just a matter of time before they got there."
