McAdam: ‘Strictly on merit' Bogaerts should be All-Star

The MLB All-Star game starters were announced Sunday night. There were 620 million votes cast – seemingly all by Kansas City Royal fans – as there are four Royals in the American League starting lineup.

On Monday, the respective team managers will select reserves, which begs the question as to which player will make it from the Red Sox, since all teams need to be represented.

It's hard to make an argument for anybody other than Xander Bogaerts. This season, the 22-year-old ranks second among A.L. shortstops with a .302 batting average, and is first in hits (88), doubles (18), runs batted in (37) and OPS (.756).

"If you’re going strictly on merit, Bogaerts is the Red Sox' All-Star choice," Sean McAdam said.
