The Boston Red Sox' No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft started at shortstop and hit third in the lineup for the second game of a doubleheader vs. the FCL Orioles.

Mayer drew four-pitch walks in his first two plate appearances and a five-pitch walk in his third. In his fourth and final plate appearance, the 18-year-old grounded out to second base. He finished 0-for-1 with three walks and a run scored.
Defensively, Mayer provided a small glimpse of why his smooth fielding often draws comparisons to San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford. He went up and snagged a bouncing grounder and tossed it to first for the out.
Altogether, a solid first impression from the Red Sox' No. 3 ranked prospect.
The FCL Red Sox defeated the FCL Orioles, 7-3. Mayer will look for his first professional hit when they take on the FCL Twins on Friday at 12 p.m. ET.
