Former Red Sox catcher Blake Swihart could be headed for his third team this summer.
In April, the Sox designated Swihart, whom they drafted in 2015, for assignment after more than four years with the organization. Soon after, the Arizona Diamondbacks picked him up, sending outfield prospect Marcus Wilson back to Boston.
Swihart failed to live up to expectations in Boston, and similarly struggled in Arizona. In 31 games with the D-Backs, Swihart hit .136 with three home runs and nine RBI.
On Monday, Arizona designated Swihart for assignment. Now, they have seven days to either trade him to another team or place him on outright waivers. It's possible that Swihart clears waivers, but since he's been in the league for more than three years, he has the right to enter free agency instead of play minor league ball, according to MLB rules.
Swihart, who was a member of the 2018 World Series team, hit .255 with a .679 OPS in Boston. As recently as 2015, he was considered the top catcher prospect and among the most coveted young talents in baseball.
