Dave Dombrowski: Nathan Eovaldi being named Red Sox closer reflects team's “urgency”

The Red Sox made an unexpected decision -- to say the least -- when they named Nathan Eovaldi the closer once he returns from the injured list.

Manager Alex Cora explained the decision in his interview with MLB Network Radio on Tuesday, and President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski followed suit by addressing the media before Boston's series opener vs. the Blue Jays in Toronto.

Dombrowski says the team's sense of "urgency" compelled the Red Sox to make Eovaldi the closer, although acquisitions or Eovaldi's performance could lead to a change of plans.

As for when Eovaldi will be making his long-awaited comeback, the Red Sox are hoping to have him in the bullpen after the All-Star break. That means the hard-throwing right-hander could be back as early as July 13 when Boston begins a series vs. the Dodgers at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox bullpen needs all the help it can get as it currently leads the American League in blown saves with 17.
