Bogaerts to miss three days, Betts, Ross questionable Friday

BOSTON - Maybe next week the Red Sox roster will start to look somewhat stable. This week is minor chaos.

A pair of Red Sox are headed to the bereavement list, Matt Barnes and Xander Bogaerts. Righty Noe Ramirez and infielder Marco Hernandez are being called up from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Barnes was placed on the list on Thursday morning, so the earliest he can return to the team is Sunday, which is when he’s expected to. Players must stay on the list a minimum of three days.

Bogaerts, meanwhile, is to be added to the list Friday, so the earliest he can return is Monday. He’s expected back then.

Brock Holt, Robbie Ross Jr. and Mookie Betts are all dealing with flu-like symptoms that caused them to miss Wednesday night's game.

Holt would have been cleared to play Thursday, when the Sox and Pirates were rained out. Betts and Ross aren't out of the woods yet, though, and Betts is going to travel separately to Detroit.

“We expect Mookie to travel over tomorrow yet,” John Farrell said. “He still has some symptoms that are going along with it. He and Robbie Ross are still very tentative for tomorrow.

“We’re dealing with a number of things roster wise.  The fluidity’s there in addition to trying to get some guys back from sick bay.”

When Farrell spoke to reporters Thursday morning, he did not have an update on reliever Tyler Thornburg’s strength testing. If all goes well, Thornburg (right shoulder impingement) could start a throwing program.

David Price (left elbow) was able to get his work in Thursday morning at Fenway. He threw long toss and then threw off a mound to a standing catcher, as he did Wednesday.
