Red Sox manager Alex Cora has been vocal in his criticism of the Trump administration's handling of the recovery efforts in Cora's native Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria's devastation of the island. And while he told reporters Thursday at the Boston BBWAA Dinner he's leaning towards joining the World Series champions on their White House visit next month, he said he still hasn't made up his mind.
The "recent developments" Cora alluded to may be referring in part to reports of attempts by the White House to block disaster relief money to Puerto Rico, including a story published Wednesday in the Washington Post citing that as the primary reason for a top Department of Housing and Urban Development's resignation.
Cora has been active in his desire to help his homeland with recovery from the devastating storm that was one of the deadliest on record in the last 20 years. When he negotiated his contract with the Red Sox in October 2017, he asked them to help with with relief efforts, which they were eager to oblige. When he won the World Series this past fall, he brought the trophy back to Puerto Rico.
