A day after Mookie Betts was placed on the disabled list and only a week after making his 2018 Red Sox debut, Dustin Pedroia is headed back to the 10-day DL with left knee inflammation.
Pedroia, the former All-Star second baseman who turns 35 in August, had knee surgery in October and has spent the spring rehabbing. He went 1-for-15 for Triple-A Pawtucket before playing for Boston for the first time last Saturday and had gone 1-for-11 for the Red Sox in three games since returning. He's missed the past two games in Houston with knee soreness.
Brock Holt, who started Friday night in Houston, and Eduardo Nunez will again fill in at second base with Pedroia out.
Betts, still leading the majors in hitting at .359, missed six games with soreness a left abdominal strain before being placed on the DL Friday.
To take their roster spots, the Red Sox have called up left-handed reliever Bobby Poyner and first baseman Sam Travis from Pawtucket.
